Chapter Sixteen

Remembrances

T he birds sang happily as Kyra leaned against Tyr’s shoulder, who hummed deep in his chest as they processed the updates in each other’s lives. He was a gladiator now, Kyra learned—enslaved to fight for a woman who didn’t care if he lived or died.

“You know, I’m really happy you reached out to me this time, Kyra. You’re really growing more powerful. I’m proud of you,” Tyr said, looking down to give her a blinding smile.

Kyra returned the smile. It was hard not to when Tyr made her feel so appreciated. Then the corners of her lips quirked downward. “I don’t like knowing Keegan’s name, Tyr,” Kyra admitted. It felt like a violation of privacy—as though the knowledge were a betrayal.

“Well, if you’re that concerned, then just tell him. From what you’ve told me, he seems reasonable enough,” Tyr responded, playing with Kyra’s wild hair. “You even have his Token around your neck.”

Kyra peered down toward the trinket. “I’m suddenly dreaming with the Token around my neck, and I don’t even know what it means.”

“Well, when you are here, you only appear as how you see yourself. For example, I just cut my braids, but here, I still see myself with long hair,” Tyr explained, completing a braid on Kyra’s head. The sensation of Tyr braiding her hair made her feel warm inside and reminded her of Greyson.

“So that means that I’m imagining toting Keegan with me for the foreseeable future?”

“Do you?” Tyr asked.

“I mean, I feel like I really got through to him during our adventure to the carnival. He’s not like the other men I’ve seen. Elijah just wanted to hurt people for his own gain. Abraham is driven by revenge. Keegan claims to be evil, but I don’t think he is. He just seems like he needs a friend,” Kyra said. “Besides, he’s a good distraction from Eden.”

Tyr stopped braiding her hair, his eyes snapping to hers. “Explain! I thought you liked her. You even Dreamwalked to her and that’s really saying something.”

“I have strong feelings for her,” Kyra admitted, blushing deeply as she reached back to rub the back of her neck. Her eyes drifted nervously away from Tyr’s. “I’m concerned about when we get to Cypress. Will she wipe my memory like she was going to do with Hayden? Will she turn around and leave me there? I don’t want to think about it.”

“That’s even more reason to enjoy the time you have with her now,” Tyr said, resuming his work on her hair.

“I hate it when you have good advice,” Kyra said.

Tyr chuckled. “I mean, would you regret not kissing the girl?” He only laughed when Kyra’s blush deepened. “That’s what I thought! Get out there.”

“And how’s your relationship going with Garrick?” Kyra teased, trying to get the attention off of her love life. But she regretted asking that question when Tyr’s jaw ticked.

“I’m terrified, Kyra,” he confessed, dropping his hands into his lap. “I can’t reach out to Garrick anymore, and when I do, I can only feel the blinding pain of whatever is happening to him.
